Initial battery check (engine off):
Voltage test: Set the digital multimeter to DC voltage (20V range). Measure the battery terminals. The reading of a healthy battery should be 12.4-12.6V. It should be noted that if it is a 24V battery, the measured voltage should be around 25.6V
12V battery below 12.4V, 24V battery below 25V: Charge the battery before continuing, as insufficient battery power will affect the results.

Test the output of the AC generator (engine running):
Start the engine and let it idle. Measure the battery voltage again. (Measurement is required when the battery is not severely depleted or when high-power electrical appliances are not used)
Normal range: A 12V vehicle should be between 13.8-14.4V to indicate that the AC generator is charging. A 24V vehicle should indicate that the AC generator is charging between 26.8V-28.8V.
The voltage generated by a 12V generator is lower than 13.8V, and the voltage generated by a 24V generator is lower than 26.8V: insufficient charging may occur (due to AC generator malfunction, loose belt, or wiring issues).
The voltage generated by a 12V generator is above 14.4V, and the voltage generated by a 24V generator is above 28.8V: overvoltage (voltage regulator failure, usually in the AC generator).

Load testing:
Turn on the high suction attachments (headlights, air conditioning, rear defroster). The voltage should be maintained above 12.5V. 24V AC generator not less than 24.3V
Significant decrease (e.g. below 13V): The AC generator may struggle under load.
Diode test (AC voltage check):
Switch the digital multimeter to AC voltage. Measure the battery terminals while the engine is running.
Normal: Less than 0.5V AC power.
High AC voltage: A diode fault in the AC generator.
Belt and Physical Inspection:
Belt Condition: Check for cracks, glazing, or looseness. A slipping belt may cause squealing and reduce charging efficiency.
Tension: Press midway on the belt; it should deflect ~½ inch. Adjust or replace if loose.
Alternator Noises: Grinding or whining suggests bearing failure.
Battery Health Confirmation:
Ensure the battery is not the root cause. Use a load tester or have it checked at an auto shop.
Dashboard Warning Light:
A lit battery/alternator light while driving often indicates charging system issues.
Optional Professional Testing:
Many auto parts stores offer free alternator testing (in-vehicle or bench-testing). This uses specialized tools to assess voltage, current, and diode health.

Interpretation of Results:
Normal Voltage (13.8–14.4V): Alternator is functioning.
Low/No Voltage Rise: Faulty alternator, bad wiring, or loose belt.
Overvoltage: Defective voltage regulator.
High AC Voltage: Failed diodes.
Safety Tips:
Avoid touching moving parts (e.g., belts) while the engine runs.
Disconnect the battery before servicing the alternator to prevent electrical shorts.
