When sourcing a replacement BMW starter, many buyers only reference the vehicle chassis code. BMW uses different starter units across chassis including BMW E30 starter motor, BMW E36 starter motor and BMW E39 starter motor. Most factory starters for these models are manufactured by Valeo, so cross-checking both BMW OEM numbers and Valeo part numbers is essential.
Match Starter by Chassis, Engine Code & Part Numbers
BMW E30 Starter Motor The BMW E30 starter motor fits M10, M20 engines. Confirm BMW OEM number and corresponding Valeo reference number. Even within E30 chassis, engine variants use different starters. Do not rely only on chassis code.
BMW E36 Starter Motor For BMW E36 starter motor, it covers M42, M44, M50 engines. Valeo is the original equipment supplier. The pinion teeth, mounting flange and power rating vary between 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder variants.
BMW E39 Starter Motor
BMW E39 starter motor applies to M52, M54 engines. The Valeo OEM starter for E39 has unique mounting dimensions and power specs. V8 E39 models use completely different starter assemblies.
Core Matching Checklist for BMW Starters
- BMW OEM part number (stamped on original starter housing)
- Valeo cross-reference part number
- Engine code (critical, more reliable than chassis code alone)
- Voltage, power, pinion gear teeth and rotation direction
- Mounting flange & bolt hole layout
- Important Tip: Same BMW chassis code does not guarantee the same starter. One chassis can carry multiple engine options. Always verify engine code + OEM/Valeo part numbers together.
